Twisters pt.1

The theme of spring is definitely purification and detox! Whatever we have gained from all that winter munching and holiday drinking is about to find its way out of our bodies. In Chinese medicine, spring is considered to be the season of the liver and detoxification. Our liver begins to work even harder than ever to purify, detoxify and eliminate all the wastes from what we had stored over the winter.

Twisting poses are great because not only do they help mobilize your spine so that your body can return to a naturally good posture, but they also improve digestive functioning. Twisting poses help you relax, as a spinal twist brings about suppression of sympathetic nervous system (the fight-or-flight response).

Here’s a very relaxing twisting pose.. Should try it before bed, especially if you can’t seem to switch off from your busy day.

Shava Udarakarshanasana (universal spinal twist)

  1. Lie down with your arms and legs straight, and legs and feet together.
  2. Stretch the arms out to the sides at shoulder level with the palms facing down.
  3. Bend both legs and place the soles of your feet on the floor (or mattress if you’re in bed already!) Place the left hand on top of the right knee.
  4. Taking long, slow breaths, inhale, and exhale bring both knees down towards the floor on the left side of the body, keeping the leg bent and feet together.
  5. Turn the head to the right, gazing beyond your middle finger. The right arm and shoulder should remain in contact with the floor. This is the final position. Maintain calm breath and hold for as long as comfortable.
  6. Return to the starting position, bringing the head and knees to the centre. Repeat on the opposite side.

In the final position, your head should be turned in the opposite direction to the knees. Relax your belly and feel your breath gently massaging your organs as your belly inflates and deflates with your breath.
